The article 'Family Matters' by Salvatore Liccardo and Sandra Wabnitz explores life among medieval Eurasian nomads, which is still largely unknown due to the paucity of written sources and the need to rely on ethnographic information from different chronological and geographical contexts. Thanks to developments in aDNA research, these are gradually being explored. This allows us to re-evaluate past paradigms of ethnicity, family dynamics and human mobility. This article attempts to explore the social limits and cultural connotations of levirate marriage using recent genetic evidence from burial sites in the Carpathian Basin (in present-day Austria and Hungary). medieval worlds | no. 20 | 2024 | Pages 191 - 227
